Columbia University is a private Ivy League research university in New York City. It is also known as Columbia and formally as Columbia University in the City of New York. Columbia University, founded in 1754 as King’s College on the grounds of Trinity Church in Manhattan, is the oldest institution of higher learning in New York and the fifth-oldest in the United States.

In response to the establishment of Princeton College, Columbia was founded by royal charter from George II of Great Britain. Following the American Revolution, it was renamed Columbia College, and in 1787, it was placed under the control of a private board of trustees led by former students Alexander Hamilton and John Jay.

The university was renamed Columbia University and moved to its current location in Morningside Heights in 1896.
