Best ways to free up space in Windows 10

Freeing up space is an essential task in Windows 10, mostly if free space is a constant problem. Throughout the course of time, the program accumulates several files, some more or less important, that the user can easily remove in the form of a few extra gigabytes to obtain some slack.

Windows 10 has a set of device tools that allow you to conduct a comprehensive cleanup and delete several unused files, through the space on your computer. You may also disable those features, which are more or less required to increase the gains (depends on each case).

Total Time: 30 minutes

  1. Removing basic files

    disk cleanup, free,space

    To free up space, The Disk Cleanup tool is one of the most basic and full for extracting simpler files. It can delete browser archives, temporary system files, error logs, forgotten files in the Recycle Bin or Download folder, and even restore system files that Windows 10 no longer requires after changes.

    i. In the Windows 10 search bar, type “Disk Cleanup” and click on the program icon;

    ii. Select the disk you want to check and click OK ;

    iii. Disk Cleanup will scan for files that are no longer needed and display the results;

    iv. Under Files to be excluded, check the boxes for the files you want to delete;
    Click on OK.

    This approach eliminates temporary files (system and internet), thumbnails (icon previews, which take up a lot of space), cache files, Download folder content and Recycle Bin material, etc.

  2. Removing system files

    Disk Cleanup is also capable of deleting system files as installers of system updates, most essential for Windows 10 up to a certain level. This data is not immediately removed and takes up space.

    i. Click Clear system files;

    ii. Select the disk you want to check and click OK ;

    iii. Disk Cleanup will rescan, and new cleaning options will appear;

    iv. Under Files to be excluded, check the boxes for the files you want to delete;

    v. Click on OK.

    Following the second scan, Disk Cleanup can show options for deleting data from Windows Update (which takes up a great deal of space), Windows Defender, and system driver packages on your machine. These files are considered expendable in all situations and can be safely deleted.

  3. Adjusting the System Restore

    system restore

    You can also remove points from the System Restore function inside Disk Cleanup, which is useful to return the system to a specific point in case of problems. Here, all points except the last can be removed and space free on Windows 10.

    i. Within Disk Cleanup, click on the More Options tab ;

    ii. Under System Restore and Shadow Copies, click Clean ;

    iii. Windows 10 will ask if you want to remove all saved restore points except the most recent one.

    iv. Click Delete.

    If you want to delete all restore points, including the last one (which is not recommended ), do the following:

    i. Open the File Explorer ;

    ii. Right-click on This Computer, and then click Properties ;

    iii. Click System protection ;

    iv. Click Configure ;

    v. Click Delete, and then click Continue.

    vi. You can also disable Restore by clicking Disable system protection or adjust the space limit reserved for the resource, sliding the slide in Max Usage to the desired value;

    vii. Once the changes are made, click OK.

  4. Disabling the hibernation cache

    hibernation cache

    Windows 10’s hibernation feature, useful for notebooks and tablets, holds files and programs open in the RAM memory of the computer while it is put in low-power mode, saving loading time for next use. The device uses a cache unique to it.
    This function is almost useless for a desktop-only; in this case, you can easily free up space on Windows 10.

    Instead of fully shutting down your machine, you can put it in hibernate — a quasi-shutdown state that helps you to get started quicker. When your computer goes into hibernation, it saves before shutting down a snapshot of your files and drivers and this takes up space. If the fast startup isn’t your priority, you can reclaim some precious hard drive space by fully disabling hibernate, since the hiberfil.sys file takes up 75 percent of the RAM installed on your computer. This means you can clear up 6 GB instantly by disabling the hibernate if you have 8 GB of RAM.

    i. In the search bar, type “cmd”;

    ii. Right-click Command Prompt, Run as administrator, and then click Yes ;

    iii. Type the command “powercfg.exe / hibernate off” and hit Enter.
